Calah bread
- 1 pkg dry yeast
- ¾ c of warm water
- 1 T sugar
- 2 ½ c flour
- 1 tsp. salt (I don’t double salt when doubling recipe)
- 1 egg
- 1 T oil or shortening
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 T water
- Dissolve yeast in water; add sugar, salt, oil and egg. Mix in flour until easy to handle. Turn on a floured board and knead until smooth.
- Put in a large greased bowl and cover about ½ hour or longer, it should double, then punch down and divide into 3 portions, roll each into long strands and braid them into a loaf.
- Place on a baking sheet and cover again for about ½ hour. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes.
- Brush braid with egg yolk and water mixture if desired prior to baking.
- Also if you add dill, raisins or other ingredients to bread do it when you braid the loaf
